System Boiler Guide: Prices, Pros & Cons and Leading Brands

System boilers are ideal for homes with multiple bathrooms and properties with limited loft space.

Purchasing and installing a system boiler is never going to be cheap but there are lots of solutions available in a variety of outputs and from different boiler brands. System boiler prices typically range from £480 to £2,800, with the installation costing between £600 and £1,500 depending on the amount of work involved and the time it takes to install the boiler.

Now, this may seem like a lot of money to be investing in a system boiler but you need to remember that installing a new energy-efficient boiler can help to save you money on your fuel bills. The savings that can be made by upgrading to a more economical boiler could actually far outweigh the cost of your new system boiler and the installation.

There are, in fact, many advantages of choosing a system boiler for your home but you need to compare prices in order to find the best deal. Our guide not only enables you to compare brands and their prices but it also explains how system boilers work and the pros and cons to consider before getting one installed.

    System Boiler Advantages and Disadvantages

System boilers are a more efficient alternative to regular (conventional) boilers and are a particularly great choice for households with greater hot water demands. While system boilers come with their own set of unique advantages, there are some drawbacks to consider too.

    Advantages

Provide hot water to several taps at once: Since system boilers heat water ahead of time and keep the hot water stored in a cylinder, you can use several taps simultaneously without experiencing a sudden drop in water pressure. This also means that system boilers allow you to run more than one shower or bath at the same time, making them ideal for larger homes with en-suites or multiple bathrooms.

Neater and less disruptive installation: System boilers have a built-in pump, expansion vessel and other individual components to allow for a neat and easy installation. The inbuilt components also make servicing and maintenance straightforward.

No need for a loft tank: There is only one external component required when installing a system boiler, which is a hot water storage cylinder (usually found in the airing cupboard). As no cold water tank is needed in the attic, you won’t lose any precious space in your loft (if you have one).

Economical running costs: System boilers use a pump to quickly send hot water to your taps and radiators when requested, ensuring a faster response time and lower running costs.

Compatible with solar water heating systems: Most system boilers are compatible with solar water heating, giving you the opportunity to reduce your carbon footprint and energy bills even further.

    Disadvantages

Hot water is not instantly available: As system boilers heat up water in advance, hot water is not immediate. You can, however, use a timer to make sure you have hot water when it is typically required throughout the week. Alternatively, you can turn on your hot water a while before you want to have a bath or shower. A system boiler may not be the best option if you use hot water at different times on different days of the week.

Limited hot water: The amount of hot water that can be supplied is limited to the amount of water your cylinder can store, which means you could run out if you tend to use a lot of hot water at once. If you do run out, you will have to wait for the boiler to produce enough hot water to refill the cylinder in order to have access to hot water again. You also need to make sure your cylinder is well insulated to ensure you don’t waste energy as a result of heat loss.

You lose airing cupboard space: Like we mentioned before, all system boilers need a hot water storage cylinder (or tank) in the airing cupboard so they actually take up more space than combi boilers. But remember, they take up less space than heat only boilers which require bulky tanks in the loft.
